Being With course

Thank you for your interest in the Being With course offered by St. Dunstan’s.  This course is a creation of the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells, Vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London. Unlike your usual enquirers class which focuses on you getting new information from someone who has that information which you don’t, Being With focuses on a lived encounter of Christ. The course is founded on the belief that the Holy Spirit is already active in the lives of you and me, so each of us, leader and participant, share and engage with one another to learn what the Holy Spirit might be offering us.

The course requires some commitment: ten weeks requiring each person, including the hosts, to engage in sharing and conversation, listening and reflection. There’s no book to buy or read, just a willingness to engage for an hour and a half each week to be with others, and to be with God. That being with happens within the context of a story.

The story of God is our story and when we connect, remember, open our story to an intersection with God’s story then amazing things happen. That’s what the Being With course is all about, opening you and your story up so that you find God already there. In the course of that hour and a half you’ll be invited to reflect on your week, imagine where your story and God’s story connect, listen to a reflection and share your thoughts about it. It’s not a test; it’s not to be judged; it’s not to get the answer ‘right.’ It’s you and your life, with God, living out the greatest mystery which opens up a delight to encounter.

If you are interested in the Being With course it is limited to six to ten persons per session. We will offer two sessions, Session One will meet on Monday afternoons from 2:00pm–3:30pm (beginning August 22) and is geared to people who’re familiar with the Episcopal Church and have long been active and a part of the church. Session Two will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm–8:30pm (beginning on August 24) and is geared to people who’re new to the Episcopal Church or new to Christianity, or even coming back to try Christianity again after a painful experience.

If you would like to participate in the Being With course at St. Dunstan’s you may email Fr. Thomas as thomas@stdunstansauburn.org or Samantha Herbert at Samantha.lawrie12@gmail.com and let either know which session might be the best fit for you.
